We all can know it when we see it, but when I think of what this means I usually consider it a compromise of values or integrity for the sake of someone or something else. Selling out implies that money has changed hands in exchange for someone softening their message, or diluting their art, or changing their political stripes. It can mean a lot of things, but at the heart of selling out is trust, and the lack of certainty that the person we see is still acting of their own agency.
